Mathematics and Natural Science Stream
The Mathematics and Natural Science is one of the five streams in the college. Currently, the stream encompasses five departments: namely, the department of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and ICT. In each department there are instructors with different fields of specialization accordingly.
The Stream hosts and trains student-teachers in three fields on the basis of Generalist and specialist approach in regular, evening and summer programs. To capacitate our trainees the trainingsare delivered both practically and theoretically. Hence, laboratory sessions are well equipped with necessary materials for such practical works.
The mission of the stream is to:
- Produce competent teachers for primary schools.
- Undertake researches used as inputs for educational policy, quality education, Progressive teaching- learning process and others.
- Support primary school teachers professionally through different types of trainings.
Overview
RCTE has been running a Diploma program in mathematics under stream of Mathematics and Natural Science. So far, it has produced many teachers. The courses offered in the program constitute a highly advanced body of knowledge in mathematics and are designed to familiarize students with the recent advances in their areas of specialization. Currently, the department is running the training with seven MSc instructors.
Vision of the Department
The Department of mathematics aspires to be a prominent mathematical center committed to the advancement and dissemination of mathematical knowledge and to the training of competent and responsible mathematicians who will contribute to the development of our nation.
Mission of the Department
The department of Mathematics
- Offers mathematics courses for student-teachers of the department.
- Conducts research in the area of Mathematics.
- Offers service courses in various departments across the CTE.
In addition, the department has the following objectives:
- To produce trained manpower in Mathematics for primary schools in the region;
- To initiate, promote and foster research in various disciplines of Mathematics;
- To strengthen the research capacity of the Department of Mathematics in various branches of mathematics;
Overview
Physics is a fundamental science concerned with the observation, understanding and prediction of natural phenomena and the behavior of man-made systems. It deals with profound questions about the nature of the universe and with some of the most important practical, environmental and technological issues of our time.
The scope of physics is broad and encompasses mathematical and theoretical investigation, experimental observation, computing technique,technological application, material manipulation and information processing. Physics seeks simple explanations of physical phenomena based on universal principles stated in concise and powerful language of mathematics. The principles form a coherent unity, applicable to all objects found in nature. Findings in Physics have implications in all walks of life ranging from the way we perceive reality to things of everyday uses.
The current staff profile of the Department is: 2 Assistant Professors, 2 Bsc Lab assistant, 1 PhD candidate and 1 MSc Candidate.
Overview
Biology department is one of the five departments under Natural Science and Mathematics Stream of Robe College of Teachers Education. Currently it has six professional instructors and two laboratory technicians. Among these instructors; one is a PhD candidate, one Assistance professor, three of them are MSc degree and one is degree holder. Most of the courses delivered by the department are belong to the candidates / classes of the new modality education of our country (Integrated and Generalist). On these bases about two courses are given as common courses for all of the students in the college. The department also has facilities like; botanical garden, one well equipped laboratory room, one additional serving lab. room and one new modern lab. room ready for giving service. Some of the courses given by the department are Basic biology (Biol. 201), General biology I (Biol. 211), General biology II (Biol. 222), General biology III (Biol.323).
The department provides pre-service and in-service teachers training in three programs namely; regular, evening and summer. In addition to pre-service training the department coordinates and gives short term in-service training for primary schools teachers in collaboration with government and non-government organizations under CPD (Continuous Professional Development) program of the college. Some of the topics we offer short term training are, subject based active learning methods, how to use and teach with science kit, continuous assessment methods, and TALULAR (Teaching and Learning Using Locally Available Resources). Finally, the department has full interest to work in collaboration with any interested and voluntary organization or individual of similar objectives with us.
Vision of the Department
- To cultivate competent and have good personality teachers of primary school in the discipline of biology/ integrated science.
- To train under graduate (first degree) of Biology teachers in a native language, Afan Oromo
Mission of the Department
- To produce well qualified and competent teachers with efficient teaching profession in the discipline of biology/integrated science.
- To investigate and make researches on the biological values, biological resources, medicinal plants, environmental conservations, etc of the region/country
- Progressively, the department has inspire to raise its level to train under graduate (degree) of Biology teachers in native language, Afan Oromo
Overview
The Department of Chemistry in the Stream of Mathematics and Natural Sciences renders significant contributions to the dissemination of knowledge and development of scientific manpower in the Region. The members of the department have been diligently working over the years to fulfill the expected aims and objectives of the country at large, and the region in particular.
Mission of the Department
The Department of Chemistry serves the region by advancing and disseminating knowledge and educating students. The Department strives to strengthen its capacity to teach and conduct research. It continues to employ experienced academic and technical staff and acquire modern instruments to nurture the existing and emerging programs.
Vision of the Department
The Department of Chemistry at RCTE will continue directing its potential at promoting systematic and untiring efforts towards diverse, dynamic and innovative teaching, research and community service activities in order to achieve regional recognition as a premier institution of learning.
Overview
The ICT (Computer Science program) was started as one of the department within the Stream of Mathematics and Natural Science. As computers were introduced into governmental and nongovernmental institutions, the need for trained manpower in Computer Science was very vital.
The Department uses two computer laboratories in the college with a total of more than 50 desktop computers. These laboratories are used to conduct practical works for students in the college.
